It’s hard to believe 40 years have passed since Indiana Jones first hit the big screen, carving out a beloved place in pop culture history. It was back on June 12, 1981 when ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ was released in theatres. The brainchild of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, audiences were thrilled with the whip, mesmerized the hat, enthralled by the iconic soundtrack, and scared by the snakes. It had to be snakes.
Forty years and three sequels later, Indiana Jones fans have much to celebrate. Paramount has re-released each movie in the franchise in 4K UHD – all approved by Spielberg himself! That means you can really see the detail on those Nazi knockout punches. Pow!
Once you’re done binging ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’, ‘Temple of Doom’, ‘The Last Crusade’ and ‘Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’, more Indy action is coming your way!
Filming has begun on a fifth movie. No title yet – they’re just calling it Indiana Jones 5 for now. Harrison Ford has been spotted in the U.K., with filming locations in Scotland and Northern England. Fans with a keen eye will have noticed a few on-set photos of Ford with black dots on his face, fuelling rumours the 78-year-old will be made to look younger in post-production. (We’ll have to wait and see).
Some other Hollywood A-listers have been named on the project, including Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Mads Mikkelsen, who’s rumoured to be Indy’s latest foe. Unfortunately, it’s also expected this will be the last film in the Indiana Jones franchise.
George Lucas got to work on this movie not long after ‘Crystal Skull’ in 2008. Steven Spielberg was tapped to direct for a fifth time but has handed off the reins to ‘Logan’ director James Mangold, opting for a supervising producer role instead. After a few script re-writes and the countless film production setbacks during Covid-19, Indiana Jones 5 has a release date: July 29, 2022.
