Tasty

Charlie the Tuna was one hip fish. He was fashionable, a devotee of the arts, and even bumped fins with celebs. At the end of the day though, all that good taste meant squat. StarKist only wanted tuna that tasted good. Sorry Charlie 🤣

As far as fish goes, it’s hard to get more agreeable than the good taste of tuna, but there’s a new swimmer trying to make a play. Strange as it sounds, the latest trend is chocolate (don’t worry, not chocolate covered) sardines

Just don’t look for them here ;)

Ketones linked to better heart health

Vecteezy

A new study conducted by researchers at the University of Portsmouth found consuming ketone supplements can potentially lead to better heart health and alleviate the symptoms of Type 2 diabetes.

Ketones are designed to induce ketosis, a metabolic state in which the body burns energy by consuming fat instead of carbohydrates.

“It’s still early days, but these results are promising. We saw an improvement in cardiac efficiency after the participants had the drink with ketones, compared to a placebo drink,” said study author Dr. Maria Perissiou of Portsmouth’s School of Psychology, Sport and Health Sciences.

The study involved 13 participants being given a drink with ketone esters and then a placebo drink a week later. The researchers then monitored the bodily reaction through a process similar to an ECG.

“In all 13 of the participants, their hearts were working more efficiently after the ketone drink at rest and during moderate-intensity exercise, compared to the placebo drink. I’m feeling very positive about the results, but more research is needed because we only assessed participants on the day, which means we have no idea what the chronic impact of drinking ketones would be.”

CURIOSITIES

Here’s to a healthy scroll

Tenor

TikTok is one of the most popular and addictive apps on social media, and its negative impacts on the human psyche are well-documented. The dopamine boost one gets from doom-scrolling doesn’t have to be from doom-scrolling, though, according to the guys who came up with the idea of WikiTok on an X thread, in just a matter of minutes.

“Insane project idea,” said developer Tyler Angert on X: “all of Wikipedia on a single, scrollable page.” Bloomberg Beta VC replied, saying, “infinitely scrolling Wikipedia page based on whatever you are interested in next,” and Angert responded with the name, “WikiTok.”

“The code is very simple, there’s no backend at all actually, I believe because Wikipedia’s api [sic] is very permissive and you can just make the requests in the frontend,” said Isaac Gemal in response to a post about his project on ycombinator’s Hacker News forum after he got to work building the site. “So you just simply request random articles, get some snippets, and the image attached!”

Shortly thereafter, the site was live, on which users can scroll infinitely, but instead of consuming the dystopian nonsense that keeps users’ eyes glued to TikTok, they’re scrolling through snippets of Wikipedia pages. If they’re interested, they can click into the full page, and if not, they can simply keep scrolling.

Million dollar jersey?

Heritage Auctions

A New York Yankees jersey worn by Roger Maris during the 1961 season is expected to fetch around $1 million at a Heritage Auction, with bidding well over $300,000 already and still ten days to go before the auction closes.

’61 was the season during which Maris broke Babe Ruth’s single season homerun record set in 1927. Fittingly, Maris needed 61 homeruns to do it, though he also did it in 162 games compared to the Babe’s 154.

Still, the jersey is a piece of history, and has been authenticated to reveal Maris wore it during a stretch of the season when he hit five homeruns in just three games.

“It is always an honor and a privilege to work with these incredible pieces of American history,” said Chris Ivy, Director of Sports Auctions at Heritage, in a statement. “Those uniforms worn by Hall of Fame greats during defining moments, those cards deemed the most beautiful and the rarest, those treasures from games and careers about which books have been written and movies have been made.”

AARP wants representation in Hollywood

Tenor

Hollywood has spent considerable resources making racial and ethnic representation a priority in film in recent years, and a recent AARP study says the same isn’t being done when it comes to representing different age groups.

Called “Breaking Stereotypes: The Push for Real Representation of Older Adults in Movies and Television,” the study was published the other day.

“The results of this survey demonstrate what we have suspected since we started the Movies for Grownups Awards program – that older adults care deeply about seeing their experiences accurately reflected on screen,” Heather Nawrocki, vice president of AARP Movies for Grownups, said in a statement. “Likewise, the studios and storytellers who are able to capture the experiences and perspectives of older adults benefit from the significant buying power and loyalty of this age group.”

Just over half of the survey’s respondents said they believe Hollywood’s perception that audiences prefer to put younger actors on screen is a barrier to entry or re-entry for older actors. 55% said they think characters over the age of 50 are often portrayed unfairly or unrealistically, clouding the appeal of such roles in film and TV.
