Peas in a pod

In 1986, Huey Lewis and the News found themselves at #1 on the charts for the second time. Stuck with You brought that classic upbeat Huey energy, and put a humorous spin on romantic songs. It also had a really goofy music video 🤣

Huey was happy to be stuck with someone, but there are different ways that we can be “stuck” to people. Psychologists call them attachment styles, and break them down into four different categories.

Here’s a fifth way to be stuck ;)

Massive wealth gap between renters and owners

Vecteezy

The Aspen Institute published a report recently documenting the almost unbelievably wide gap between the median net worth of American homeowners versus the median net worth of American renters.

According to the report, the median homeowner net worth in 2022 was about $400,000, whereas renters have a median of just $10,400.

“It really drives home just how far ahead homeowners are in wealth,” said Katherine Lucas McKay, associate director at the Aspen Institute’s Financial Security Program.

Put another way, owning a home in America makes you nearly 40 times wealthier than those who rent their living space.

“Homeownership itself is a major generator of wealth,” McKay said. “Just by not owning a home, there are ways that your wealth simply does not grow. Instead, you put more money into housing every year in rent, and someone else benefits from the value going up.”

Renters also tend to skew younger, and in that sense they also tend to be carrying some amount of student loan debt, a liability likely preventing many from buying property in the first place.

One-two punch game-changing cancer treatment

Vecteezy

Scientists at UC San Francisco have spent the last decade developing a cancer therapy that could eliminate a tumor before it truly forms while only targeting the cancer cells with radiation.

Radiation therapy is considered one of the most effective ways to treat cancer, but it’s an all-out assault on the body that doesn’t discriminate between cancer and healthy tissue.

The UCSF therapy combines a drug that identifies and targets cancer cells with a radioactive antibody that’s programmed to destroy them. Various trial runs saw tumors in mouse lungs and bladders completely destroyed before mutating and growing out of control.

The therapy is designed to target a cancer-causing protein called KRAS, which—when mutated—is responsible for the out-of-control cell growth that leads to one third of all cancers.

“The beauty of this approach is that we can calculate an extremely safe dose of radiation,” said Charly Craik, PhD, a professor of pharmaceutical chemistry at UCSF and co-senior author of the study. “Unlike external beam radiation, this method uses only the amount of radiation needed to beat the cancer.”

Chip implant helps treat sleep apnea

Giphy

Nearly a billion people worldwide are believed to suffer some form of sleep apnea, in which a person’s airways are temporarily blocked while resting and they stop breathing, sometimes for up to minutes at a time.

It’s one of the most common health conditions in the world, but often goes undetected since it’s typically only experienced while a person is sleeping. This is particularly problematic, though, given how dangerous and even life-threatening serious cases can be.

Available treatments typically involve wearing an airway pressure machine that will automatically kickstart breathing when it detects the person’s airway is closed. This usually involves a bulky and sleep-obstructing mask.

However, Genio Nyxoah and Inspire are two options currently seeking regulatory approval that would be much less obstructive, though slightly more invasive. For the former, a microchip is implanted in the chin, whereas the latter involves implants in the chin and the chest.

The chips are capable of detecting airway closure and activate to stimulate tongue movement, opening up the airways and inducing respiration.

CURIOSITIES

The return of the blimp?

Pexels

These days, the only blimp most people ever come across is the Goodyear Blimp while watching golf or college football. As the aviation industry needs to find increasingly creative ways to achieve net zero, though, the classic airship may be back on the menu.

"It's good that we are testing different ideas and innovations, as exploring various solutions is key to improving aviation and making it more sustainable in the future," said leading aviation expert Thomas Thessen, adjunct professor at the University of Aalborg and chief analyst at Scandinavian Airlines. "The biggest advantage I can see is that they can stay in the air for a long time, and their ability to fly vertically up.”

On the other hand, they’re obviously way too slow to keep up with the demands of modern air travel, particularly international and business travel. The fastest a typical airship goes is just over 80 mph.

At the same time, not requiring a runway to take off, much longer sustainable flight time, and not needing petroleum-based fuel are all factors that could spur curious investors to take a new chance on a once-tried and true method of aviation.

Jamie, she wrote?

A Murder, She Wrote movie is officially in the works, and it appears the role of Jessica Fletcher will be filled by none other than Oscar-winning honorary Staker, Jamie Lee Curtis.

Nobody associated with Curtis has confirmed she’s on board, but Variety did confirm she is in talks to play the timeless trench-coat-wearing crack detective.

Murder, She Wrote ran for 12 seasons, beginning in 1984. It’s unclear how far along the script is at this point, and writers Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo are reportedly just working on a plotline and developing characters for a modern reboot of the cult classic.

If Curtis is indeed featured, it may be designed as her next Oscar chase. She won the Academy Award for best supporting actress for her performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once just two years ago.

No release date has been announced for the film, but some time in 2026 seems likely.
