A happy pappy

Fred thought it was a joke when Wilma said she’d earn her own money but when she got hired to be The Happy Housewife on TV, he wasn’t laughing. Fred was left to cook his own dinners, and we were left with an iconic jingle!
When it comes to keeping your hubby, your wife, or yourself happy, a vacation can go a long way. Some places can boost your happiness more than others though, and experts have now identified the most feel-good travel destinations.

WHO issues antibiotic-resistant superbug warning

According to the World Health Organization, one in six lab-confirmed bacterial infections in 2023 were resistant to antibiotic treatments, signalling a rapidly growing health crisis that could soon lead to deadly outcomes even for typically minor injuries and infections.
“These findings are deeply concerning,” Yvan J-F. Hutin, head of the WHO’s antimicrobial resistance department, told reporters. “As antibiotic resistance continues to rise, we’re running out of treatment options and we’re putting lives at risk.”
Anti-microbial resistance (AMR) growth between 2018 and 2023 accelerated considerably, with 40% of WHO-tracked antibiotics seeing a reduction in effectiveness. Resistance rose between 5% and 15% annually, WHO said.
The speed at which bacterial pathogens are fortifying against antibiotic treatments is outpacing modern medicine’s ability to keep up, said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
Adding to the dilemma, Hutin noted 48 countries don’t even track AMR data, making it difficult to identify breaches in the available medical defenses against suberbug threats.
“We are definitely flying blind in a number of countries and regions that have insufficient surveillance systems for antimicrobial resistance,” he said.

Pan Am returns

Pan Am was one of the most iconic airlines of the 20th century golden era of air travel. It ceased operations in 1991, but an ambitious group of investors is partnering with the brand to resurrect the carrier and return it to the sky where it belongs.
“Avi8 has assembled a world-class team to lead the certification effort and has received strong initial support from aircraft lessors and key vendors,” said a spokesperson for AVi8 Air Capital.
Avi8 and Pan Am Brands have opened formal application processes with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Department of Transportation (DoT) to get the airline recertified as a Part 121 scheduled carrier, allowing it to resume regular operations as a commercial airline.
Pan American Global Holdings—the parent of the once-bustling airline and Pan Am Brands—announced the partnership with Avi8 in June prior to opening up the application processes.
“We are excited to partner with AVi8 to explore how best to bring the Pan Am brand back to the skies as a scheduled commercial airline,” said Pan Am Global Holdings CEO Craig Carter. “With its legacy of innovation, service excellence, and global connectivity, Pan Am remains a cherished name in aviation.”

Vitamin B2 linked to lower dementia risk

Riboflavin—otherwise known as vitamin B2—is found in dairy, fish, lean meats, mushrooms, almonds, and spinach, many of which are hallmarks of the Mediterranean diet. A study published recently in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition found regular consumption of B2 may lead to a 49% reduction in dementia risk.
The researchers compiled data from the Circulatory Risk in Communities Study (CIRCS), which followed 1,471 Japanese adults between 40 and 69 for around 15 years, tracking their diets using 24-hour recall.
The study found participants who consumed the most riboflavin had a 49% lower risk of developing serious dementia compared to those who ate the least, and a 20% reduction for those who consumed the most vitamin B6 compared to those who ate the least.
Because the researchers conducted an observational study, they weren’t able to establish a causal link, but a correlative one. They also weren’t able to determine the difference in risk factor between general forms of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease specifically.

OpenAI will stop saving users’ deleted posts

Since December 2023, OpenAI has been saving deleted user posts not to train ChatGPT’s algorithm but because the company was ordered to retain them by way of a court order issued as part of a lawsuit filed by the New York Times.
The Times alleged OpenAI was using its intellectual property to train the algorithm, and when other news organizations joined the suit, the court decided the entirety of ChatGPT’s written history was evidence for discovery. It ordered the company to save logs of every post—live and deleted—for an “indefinite” period.
The order was described as extreme by many, forcing OpenAI to infringe on the privacy rights of millions of users.
“The New York Times and other plaintiffs have made a sweeping and unnecessary demand in their baseless lawsuit against us: retain consumer ChatGPT and API customer data indefinitely,” said Brad Lightcap, COO, OpenAI, in June.
Now both OpenAI and the complainants appear to have arrived at a compromise on the matter. Last Thursday a joint motion was approved by U.S. Judge Ona Wang allowing the preservation order to expire on the condition that logs specifically related to the case be retained.
The case remains ongoing and could result in one of the most important precedents of the 21st century as it relates to the relationship between artificial intelligence and intellectual property.

Netflix adds five classic games

jvgsjeff
Growing up, rainy summer days with nothing on the docket were made for family board games. If it wasn’t Monopoly or Scrabble, you were polishing off your miming and acting skills for a charades showdown.
While those days might be in the rearview, and technology has displaced the traditional boardgame, the ritual remains and Netflix is capitalizing with the introduction of five party games that can be played on the TV by everyone in the room.
Boggle Party, Pictionary: Game Night, Tetris Time Warp, Lego Party and Party Crashers: Fool Your Friends will be available “soon,” according to Netflix. iPhone users can download the Netflix app and Netflix Game Controller app from the App Store, and Android users can download Netflix from the Google Play Store before scanning the QR code that pops up on the TV.
"We think of this as a successor to family board game night or an evolution of what the game show on TV used to be," said Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters on an earnings call earlier this year.
This isn’t Netflix’s first foray into gaming, with the streamer already having a footprint in story-driven games like Too Hot To Handle and Grand Theft Auto. The party game additions will serve to drive new app usage intended for family settings.
